In Sanskrit they are called Mala (माला) meaning garland. In Tibetan they are called Trengwa. Some call them Buddhist rosary. They are also used for keeping counts while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a Mantra or the name or names of a deity. The Malas can be made from sandalwood, rosewood, the wood of the Bodhi seed, bone, Rudraksha, crystal, etc. They can be made with 16, 21, 27, 28, 54 or 108 beads.
